You do not have to be treated by the company’s doctor of choice. You can choose your own GP.
Not only do you have the right to see your family doctor for treatment and to obtain WorkCover Certificates of Capacity, it is strongly advised.
If you are injured at work, you should consult with a trusted GP of your choice. It is important that you regularly consult with a doctor who is well versed in the history of your injury and requirement for treatment.
Some employers may try to force you to see the company doctor. You do not have to receive treatment from the company doctor. It is always your decision who you see for treatment and this includes attending for Certificates of Capacity.
WorkSafe, their agents, and sometimes your employer are entitled to have you assessed by independent doctors for reasons such as assessing your capacity to return to work and the management of your claim. However, this can only be for assessment, not for treatment and their requests must be reasonable and not too frequent.
There have also been reported instances where employers have pressured workers to allow them to sit in on private and confidential medical appointments. You do not have to allow your employer to attend your appointments with your GP.
If your employer is pressuring you, you should seek advice.
